Carol Thurmond gave birth to her son, Joshua, in 1988. He was shortly thereafter diagnosed with Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa. The doctors assured Carol that EB was so rare, it was highly unlikely she would ever have another child with the same diagnosis.

Her daughter, Sarah, was born and diagnosed with EB one year later.

As a registered nurse, Carol was forced to use her skills to tend to her two children; to make their lives as comfortable and pain-free as EB allows.  Josh and Sarah were kind, thoughtful, and had a passion for learning.

Carol says that both children decided they wanted to pass at home.

“Once my children were old enough to make their own decisions - it’s their life and their body. They lived their life to the fullest.”

Sarah passed away at 20 years old in 2009.

Josh passed away at 34 in 2022.

Carol recently decided to skydive in memory of her children to help raise funds for debra of America. Below is her interview video for the Wings of Courage event.
